What is a heart attack?
A heart attack is a medical emergency that occurs when there is a severe blockage of blood flow to the heart muscle, resulting in a loss of oxygen supply and tissue damage. Plaques, a buildup of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in the heart arteries, cause this blockage through a process called atherosclerosis, as per the Mayo Clinic. Seeking immediate medical attention is crucial in the event of a heart attack. Experts advise performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on someone experiencing a heart attack.
There are various factors that can affect your risk of developing heart disease. These factors include your age, family history, lifestyle choices, and certain health conditions. When it comes to the risk of a heart attack, major factors include biological sex, medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and being overweight or obese, as well as habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, research suggests that men aged 45 and above, and women aged 55 and above, are more susceptible to heart attacks than younger individuals of both sexes.
The link between obesity and heart attack; what to know
Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excessive body fat, which increases the risk of various health issues, including heart disease. According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), excessive body weight can result in the accumulation of fatty substances in the arteries. This buildup can cause damage and blockages in the blood vessels, which can ultimately lead to a heart attack if the arteries carrying blood to the heart are affected. Moreover, obesity can also elevate blood pressure levels. A 2020 review cited by Healthline suggests that obesity accounts for 65% to 78% of primary hypertension cases. The review explains that the accumulation of fat tissue in the body can lead to complex changes that contribute to the development or exacerbation of hypertension.
There are many factors that can increase your risk of a heart attack. That said, the key is to reduce your risk.
While anyone is prone to the deadly event, making proper lifestyle changes can help lower the risk of a heart attack.
These lifestyle changes involve eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, keeping active or indulging in regular workout, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking and cutting down on alcohol consumption and most importantly, keeping a check on your cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
