As Covid-19 cases continue to surge in China, India has stepped up its tracking of variants of the virus.

Here are 10 facts about India’s efforts:

1. India has been conducting genomic sequencing of Covid-19 samples since May 2020.

2. So far, over 21,000 samples have been sequenced.

3. Of these, nearly 1,700 have been found to be positive for variants.

4. The most common variant found in India is the B.1.617, which was first identified in India in October 2020.

5. This variant is now known to be responsible for the current surge in Covid-19 cases in China.

6. India is also tracking other variants, including the B.1.1.7, first identified in the UK, and the P.1, first identified in Brazil.

7. These variants are of concern because they are more contagious and may be more resistant to vaccines.
